Special Monthly Feature: Your Baby Can Read

This is the first in special monthly Smart Baby Kid feature called Your Baby Can Read. I originally reviewed the early learning program created by Dr. Titzer in December and was a huge fan from the start. Since my children are 9 months and 2.5 years, and as a Language Arts educator with a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction, Language and Literacy who is extremely interested in children's literacy, we've committed ourselves to the Your Baby Can Read program to report on our progress at the start of each month here on Smart Baby Kid. This way my readers can decide from our real-life experience if the program is right for their own children.

So how's it going after a month? As I
suspected, it is enhancing our learning time, especially with the toddler, in ways we couldn't imagine. Previously having spent most reading time reading aloud to her, now my daughter is actually participating in the process. While the baby is interested in the videos and will sit through them, my 2.5 year old is visibly reaping the benefits of watching the videos and working with the supplemental books daily. Your Baby Can Read recommends watching the video and reading the book, in our case the Starter set, twice each day. As working parents, this is not easy to fit into our daily routine. But here's the schedule we've been able to maintain: video in the morning in the car on the way to the sitter's, video after school, book as a part of the nighttime routine, and flashcards in the diaper bag for when we are on the go. As a result, we aren't always able to make recommended viewings/readings, but it's working!

After one month my daughter can read and recognize many of the starter set words such as "hi," "arms," "dog," "elephant," mouth" and "eyes," "toes" and "gorilla"
among others. Our favorite though is the "My First Words" window book, a supplement to the program, and a nifty way to see words, actions and pictures all together. So far so good! And if you know someone thinking of purchasing Your Baby Can Read their Deluxe TV Offer Holiday Special Kit gives a discount if you buy two programs. Check back with us next month as we start Volume And if you are using the program, comment here and let us know how it's going!

Smart Giveaway: Enter to win a starter DVD by leaving any comment on this post about the Your Baby Can Read site. Click here to find out how to increase your chances. Include your email address in the post. Contest ended.

I love their infomericals. It actually shows the babies reading. I wish my parents had, had this opportunity when I was a baby. I struggeled with reading until I was 21 and learned that I really had never been taught phonics. Once I learned phonics I can really read at an adult level without struggeling. This product helps with sight recognition of words, but also helps the brain in figuring out itself what letters make what sounds. It's also great for babies and little ones who've gotten behind because of prematurity or illness. I was sick lots when I was a baby, even had a really bad case of measles as a baby. Any boost of confidence and getting ahead of the game, without it feeling like we are making them do homework is great. Since they start so small, they don't have any negative ideas with this being learning based, they just think it's a game and fun.

Your Baby Can Read! is designed for infants to children 5 years of age. The 5 DVD and word card set teaches your children whole language and phonics using a combination of sound, sight and interaction. Your Baby Can Read! takes a multi-sensory approach through interactive DVDs and sliding word and picture cards, helping a child grasp word recognition -- leading to early reading success! Best of all it's fun! JeansandTs@hotmail.com

Ellen C. said...

I like that this DVD uses a multisensory approach. Thanks for the chance.

janetfaye said...

When using the Your Baby Can Read system, children are allowed to see the words at the same time that they hear the words. Since children learn language faster and easier during infancy than any other time, we take advantage of this natural window of opportunity to teach the written language as well as spoken language.

I had class with Dr. Titzer 10 years ago at CSUF, and he spoke of this program and showed the video of his daughter that I saw a couple of weeks ago pointing at her ear and such, and with her older rolling a rock in their back yard. I thought this is a great program he came up with, unbelievable some "educators" he said, were indicating this program was akin to child abuse, probably because they didn't come up with this first. Dr. titzer handed out a copy of this video and I sent it to my daughter...in hopes she would use this.
Dr. Titzer's daughter must be 16 or so now, and I wonder how she is doing in her classes, he said she was reading at the high school level back in grade school. I expect great things from her. Kudos Dr. Titzer.
