Should schools show the presidential inauguration?

Today our school will be showing the inauguration of President Elect Obama. Surprisingly, some are against the idea leaving me wondering... why? It's a historical event, and we all know the best learning doesn't always come from a book. A perfect "teachable moment" as they say. Some feel, however, events such as these are suited more for home viewing where parents can control commentary and judgment which inevitably comes with an event steeped in politics. Taking a break from blogging about review here on Smart baby on on Cool Baby Kid as I rarely get political, the inauguration today begs the question, is it OK to show in schools or should students be watching the news coverage later in the day at home with their parents? What do you think?

  1. I think that it is a good tool for teaching kids. I think it would be nice if they watched the actually inauguration then had a lesson on how the election process works and what all the ceremonies mean.

  2. I completely agree with you and frankly was shocked some did not feel that way!

  3. I guess so... We may introduce some new topics to students rather than the everyday routine.
